"the wall street journal" reports the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation was removed from the case after it was discovered he sent a shirtless picture of himself to jill kelly. the agent who knew kelly sent the pictures before the investigation began. he was later removed from the investigation because supervisors were concerned the agent may have become obsessed with the case. >> and there's more. a team of fbi agents searching paula broadwell's home yesterday. eight to ten agents brought cardboard boxes and searched both levels of the house. the fbi confirmed agents were there but wouldn't say what they were looking for. >> obviously, a lot going on here. we have two reports. chris lawrence of the pentagon and brianna keeler in our washington bureau.

has to be on the table. what we have done is a look at the entire pentagon. this is one section on areas where the pentagon works that has nothing to do with defense. over 10 years, this is about $69 billion. that is a conservative estimate. at the end of world war two, we had 12 million men under arms. we had 2000 black officers in -- and generals. -- we had 2000 black officers and generals. -- flag officers and generals. we almost have been admiral for every ship and the navy. it is not an captain budget is not a captain. it is an admiral. we have looked at areas where we could not necessarily save all the money, but we could transfer responsibilities out of the pentagon and consolidate programs and save a significant amount of money. most of you all have been able to see this report. we highlight a lot of the stupid things are happening. i will highlight one thing. on 16 or 17 basis, we have military-run schools. the average cost to educate a child in the us will per year is $50,000. almost four times what the rest of public education cost. s. on the vast majority of our base

current job as the man in charge of the war and we heard from secretary panetta off the pentagon and also jay carney, the white house spokesman today. he's kept the confidence of the president and secretary panetta. so he will keep his job. the war will go on as it has for the past 11 years. >> jennifer: okay. since the president and secretary panetta issued a supportive statement does that indicate his denial checks out? general allen has denied, of course, having an inappropriate relationship with jill kelley. >> what a lot of people here in town think it means is that if he broke some form of protocol or some military guideline, it wasn't enough to trigger a criminal investigation by the fbi or by other federal officials and so that's the reason the justice department and the fbi handed this matter over to the pentagon's suspected general for it to look into it. that still could have serious repercussions for general allen. by keeping him on, by not suspending him as they have other general officers accused of crimes

the subject of a pentagon investigation of allegedly inappropriate communications with jill kelley. yes, that jill kelley, we're talking about the same tampa housewife whom david petraeus' then mistress paula broadwell apparently saw as rival. a whole new chapter in a saga that since last friday has been one bombshell after another. and so far, all of them have something to do with kelley. she's a volunteer military liaison at the air force base, home of the u.s. central command in tampa, florida. kelley complained to the fbi last spring when paula broadwell was having an affair with petraeus allegedly harassed her with jealous e-mails. petraeus admitted the affair with broadwell but denies any elicit contact with kelley. so does general allen who was scheduled for a senate confirmation hearing this very week to become nato's supreme allied commander. today that's on hold, but he will continue in his position as the investigation continues. and all of that as the pentagon digs through 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other communications, many with kelley over a two-year period. >>
